On Tuesday, a Turkish C-130 military cargo plane crashed in Georgia, claiming the lives of 20 soldiers. The plane, which took off from Azerbaijan, was en route to Turkey when it went down in Georgia’s Sighnaghi municipality, located near the Azerbaijani border.

The Turkish Defence Ministry confirmed the deaths and said that Turkish and Georgian authorities began inspecting the crash site early Wednesday. The cause of the crash remains unknown, and initial reports suggest the plane may have broken apart mid-air before plummeting to the ground in a fiery blaze.

The C-130 Hercules, a versatile military transport aircraft used worldwide for cargo, troop, and equipment transport, is commonly deployed by air forces for various missions, including airborne assault and reconnaissance operations.

Leaders from Azerbaijan, Georgia, and NATO, including NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, have extended their condolences to Turkey. U.S. Ambassador Tom Barrack also expressed solidarity.

Lockheed Martin, the U.S. manufacturer of the C-130 Hercules, has pledged its assistance in the investigation.
