A 23-year-old Bangladeshi student studying in Canada was killed in a late-night road crash in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Three others were injured in the incident, which remains under criminal investigation as authorities examine allegations of speeding and impaired driving.

A Bangladeshi student pursuing higher education in Canada has died following a tragic road accident in the city of St. John's, leaving his family in Bangladesh mourning and appealing for assistance to repatriate his body.

The victim, identified as Md Istinab Mahie, 23, lost his life in the early hours of Friday after the vehicle carrying him and three friends crashed near the intersection of Mayor Avenue and Newtown Road.

According to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), the collision occurred at approximately 1:30am local time. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, but Mahie succumbed to his injuries before he could be transported for medical treatment.

Three other occupants of the vehicle sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities have not disclosed details regarding the extent of their injuries or their current conditions.

Mahie's cousin, Md Mahmud Raihan, confirmed the death to local media and said the young student had moved to Canada in September 2023 to pursue his academic ambitions at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Originally from Uttar Halishahar in Chattogram, Mahie was described by relatives as a bright and hardworking young man who had travelled abroad with hopes of building a better future through education.

Speaking about the incident, Raihan said Mahie had been travelling with three friends at the time of the crash. One of the passengers, identified by family members as Koushik, was reportedly behind the wheel when the accident occurred.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Investigating officers believe speeding may have been a contributing factor.

Police also revealed that the driver involved failed a roadside screening test and was subsequently issued a licence suspension. In addition to the traffic investigation, authorities have opened a criminal probe into the incident to determine whether further charges may be warranted.

Officials have not released the identities of the injured individuals or provided additional details as the investigation remains active.

Meanwhile, Mahie's grieving parents, Md Mohibe Ullah and Parvin Akhter, have appealed to the relevant authorities in both Canada and Bangladesh for assistance in bringing their son's body back home for burial.

According to Raihan, the family has been attempting to contact the authorities responsible for facilitating the repatriation process but has yet to receive a definitive response.

The tragic death has sent shockwaves through Mahie's community in Chattogram and among Bangladeshi students studying abroad. Friends and relatives have remembered him as an ambitious young man whose life was cut short far from home.

As investigators continue to examine the events leading up to the fatal crash, Mahie's family now waits for answers and support as they prepare for the difficult task of bringing their beloved son back to Bangladesh.
