BGB Urges BSF to Stop 'Push-In' Attempts Along Bangladesh-India Border
The Chronify
Bangladesh's border force has called on India's Border Security Force to halt alleged attempts to force people across the frontier, as tensions over "push-in" incidents continue to strain relations between the neighbouring countries.
Bangladesh has formally urged India's Border Security Force (BSF) to stop alleged "push-in" attempts along the shared frontier, as concerns over border security and bilateral tensions continue to grow.
The issue took centre stage during the 57th Director General-level Border Conference between the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the BSF, held in New Delhi from June 8 to June 11. The high-level meeting brought together senior officials from both countries to discuss a range of longstanding border-related challenges.
In recent weeks, allegations of "push-ins" a practice in which individuals are allegedly forced across the border into Bangladesh without formal procedures have become a major point of contention between the two neighbours.
According to Bangladeshi authorities, BGB personnel have repeatedly prevented such attempts by intercepting individuals being pushed toward the Bangladesh side of the border. The incidents have sparked public debate and heightened diplomatic sensitivity.
The situation has also attracted widespread attention on social media, where several videos appearing to show heated exchanges between members of the two border forces have circulated online. The footage has fueled public concern and intensified calls for a lasting solution to the issue.
Tensions escalated further in recent days following an exchange of gunfire between BGB and BSF personnel near the Sonarhat border area in Goainghat upazila of Sylhet. Although both sides have sought to avoid a broader confrontation, the incident underscored the fragile nature of security along parts of the extensive Bangladesh-India frontier.
Officials familiar with the matter said that multiple flag meetings had previously been held in an effort to resolve disputes related to alleged push-ins. However, those discussions failed to produce a permanent solution, with both sides continuing to maintain differing positions on the issue.
During the latest conference in New Delhi, BGB strongly reiterated its call for India to refrain from forcing individuals across the border and instead follow established legal and diplomatic procedures in dealing with migration-related matters.
The annual border talks traditionally focus on a wide range of issues affecting the two countries, including border killings, drug trafficking, illegal migration, human trafficking, smuggling, and mechanisms to improve coordination between security agencies.
Observers note that the current dispute over push-ins has added a new layer of complexity to an already sensitive relationship. While Bangladesh and India share deep economic, cultural, and strategic ties, border management remains one of the most challenging aspects of their bilateral engagement.
Analysts believe sustained dialogue and enhanced cooperation between the two border forces will be essential to preventing future confrontations and maintaining stability along the nearly 4,100-kilometre frontier.
As concerns continue to mount, attention is now focused on whether the commitments and understandings reached during the latest BGB-BSF conference will translate into concrete actions on the ground.
For both nations, the effective management of border issues remains critical not only for security but also for preserving the spirit of partnership that has defined Bangladesh-India relations over the years.
