Determined to Seize Greenland, Trump Faces Cold Reception in Davos

US President Donald Trump arrives at the World Economic Forum in Davos amid sharp European opposition to his push to acquire Greenland. The issue has triggered one of the deepest strains in transatlantic relations in decades.
US President Donald Trump arrived in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday to attend the annual World Economic Forum, where he is expected to double down on his controversial push to take control of Greenland, despite growing resistance from European allies.
Trump’s appearance is set to dominate discussions at the elite global gathering, overshadowing broader debates on economic and geopolitical trends. His stance on Greenland has become the most visible symbol of the worsening rift between Washington and Europe.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Trump’s arrival in Davos was delayed by about three hours after his aircraft was forced to change planes late Tuesday due to what the White House described as a “minor electrical issue.”
Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, Trump confirmed he would hold meetings in Davos focused on Greenland and expressed confidence that an agreement could eventually be reached.
“I think we will work something out where NATO is going to be very happy and where we’re going to be very happy,” Trump said. “But we need it for security purposes. We need it for national security.”
European leaders have strongly rejected Trump’s position, warning that any attempt to pressure Denmark over Greenland would undermine sovereignty and destabilize the transatlantic alliance. The dispute has already prompted threats of tariffs and countermeasures, further heightening tensions as Trump takes the global stage in Davos.
