Five Indian Air Force personnel lost their lives on Saturday after a military transport aircraft crashed in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, officials confirmed.
The aircraft involved in the accident was an Antonov An-32, a twin-engine turboprop transport plane widely used by the Indian Air Force for logistical operations, troop movement, and cargo transport. According to an official statement issued by the Air Force, the aircraft met with an accident while conducting a routine sortie in the Jorhat region of Assam.
Authorities confirmed that all five individuals on board the aircraft were killed in the crash.
"The aircraft met with an accident during a routine sortie," the Indian Air Force said in a statement, adding that emergency response teams had immediately been deployed to the site.
Officials stated that efforts were underway to secure and manage the crash location while preliminary investigations had already begun to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal incident.
"Crash site management and initial enquiries are on at this time," the statement said.
Television footage aired by local media showed thick black smoke rising from the crash site, with debris from the aircraft scattered across the area. Images suggested that the aircraft had broken into multiple pieces upon impact.
The identities of the deceased personnel had not been officially released at the time of reporting, pending notification of their families.
The Antonov An-32 has long served as one of the backbone transport platforms of the Indian Air Force. India operates a fleet of approximately 100 aircraft of this type, which are used extensively in challenging terrains, including remote areas in the country's northeastern states and high-altitude regions near international borders.
Although regarded as a reliable workhorse of military logistics, the aircraft has been involved in several fatal accidents over the years.
One of the deadliest incidents involving the An-32 occurred in 2019, when another transport aircraft crashed in the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh near the border with China. That accident claimed the lives of all 13 personnel on board and raised questions about operational safety and fleet maintenance.
Saturday's crash has once again cast a spotlight on the safety of ageing military aircraft and the operational risks faced by armed forces personnel engaged in routine duties.
Military authorities have launched a formal investigation to establish the exact cause of the accident. Investigators are expected to examine factors including weather conditions, technical performance, maintenance records, and communication logs before presenting their findings.
As rescue teams continue operations at the site, condolences have poured in for the victims and their families.
The latest tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel, many of whom undertake hazardous missions in service to their country, even during routine operations far from the battlefield.
