A man wearing a black jacket was tackled to the ground after spraying an unknown substance on Representative Ilhan Omar during a town hall she was hosting in Minneapolis on Tuesday.
Video footage from the event shows the man being pinned down as members of the audience restrained him and tied his arms behind his back. As the incident unfolded, someone in the crowd could be heard exclaiming, “Oh my god, he sprayed something on her.” The audience later cheered as the attacker was removed from the room.
Despite people around her urging her to leave and get checked-one person said the liquid smelled “so bad”-Omar returned to the podium and continued addressing the audience.
“We're going to keep talking. Please, don't let them have the show,” she said, signaling her decision to proceed with the town hall.
Omar further addressed the incident by emphasizing resilience, stating, “Here's the reality that people like this ugly man don't understand - we are Minnesota strong, and we will stay resilient in the face of whatever they might throw at us.”
Calling for calm, she added, “Everybody, settle down. Gonna finish my remarks,” before continuing her criticism of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and reaffirming her demand for Noem’s resignation.
Authorities have not yet disclosed details about the substance used or the attacker’s motive.
