Prime Minister Narendra Modi has surpassed the tenure of Jawaharlal Nehru to become India’s longest-serving continuously elected prime minister, marking a historic milestone in the country’s political landscape.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has etched his name into India’s political history by becoming the country’s longest-serving continuously elected prime minister, surpassing the record previously held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
The milestone was reached on June 10, when Modi completed 4,400 consecutive days in office as an elected prime minister, overtaking Nehru’s record of 4,399 days following India’s first general election in 1952. Political leaders, international counterparts, and members of the ruling alliance marked the occasion with congratulatory messages and celebrations.
World leaders praised Modi’s leadership and highlighted India’s transformation during his tenure. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka described the achievement as a reflection of the trust repeatedly placed in Modi by the people of India. He noted that India’s economic and social progress under Modi’s leadership has inspired many countries across the region.
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape also extended his congratulations, calling Modi a model of leadership and commending India’s efforts in poverty reduction and development. He emphasized the growing partnership between the two nations and praised India’s role in supporting developing countries.
Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar similarly lauded Modi’s rise from humble beginnings to leading the world’s most populous democracy for three consecutive terms. She highlighted India’s achievements in infrastructure, economic growth, diplomacy, and social development during his years in office.
The achievement comes as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government completes 12 years in power. To mark the occasion, alliance leaders gathered in New Delhi for a high-level meeting attended by senior BJP leaders, chief ministers, deputy chief ministers, and representatives of NDA partner parties.
Sources indicated that a special resolution recognizing Modi’s record-breaking tenure and contributions to national development was expected to be adopted during the meeting.
Modi first assumed office on May 26, 2014, following a decisive electoral victory. He secured a second consecutive mandate in 2019 and returned for a third term after the 2024 general election, becoming one of the few leaders in India’s history to achieve three successive victories at the national level.
Political analysts view the milestone as a significant moment in modern Indian politics, reflecting both Modi’s enduring popularity and the sustained electoral strength of the BJP-led alliance. During his tenure, India has witnessed major initiatives in infrastructure expansion, digital transformation, economic reforms, welfare programs, and an increasingly prominent role in global affairs.
While former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served a longer cumulative period in office, her tenure was interrupted, making Modi the longest-serving continuously elected prime minister in India’s democratic history.
As celebrations continue among supporters and party leaders, the milestone is expected to further strengthen Modi’s political legacy and reinforce his position as one of the most influential leaders in contemporary India.
