Some TV networks licenses should be revoked: Trump
A controversy has erupted in the United States over the announcement that ABC television host Jimmy Kimmel’s show will be suspended indefinitely. Commenting on the issue, U.S. President Donald Trump said that the licenses of some TV networks should be revoked.
After criticism of Jimmy Kimmel’s remarks on the killing of Charlie Kirk, a close conservative ally of Donald Trump, Disney-owned ABC announced on Wednesday evening (September 17) that it would suspend the comedian’s show Jimmy Kimmel Live indefinitely.
In Monday’s (September 15) broadcast, Kimmel suggested that Kirk’s suspected killer might be a “MAGA Republican.” However, Utah authorities later confirmed that the arrested gunman, Tyler Robinson, was “indoctrinated with left-wing ideology.”
Following Kimmel’s comments, the U.S. broadcast regulator, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), warned of possible action. Shortly after, ABC decided to take the show off air, according to the BBC.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on his return from a state visit to the United Kingdom, President Trump said, “I read somewhere that 97 percent of TV networks report against me. Yet I won the last election easily. They only run negative coverage, but still get licensed. I think maybe their licenses should be revoked.”
