Trump and Modi A Sudden Change in Relations!

The Chronify

"Just months into Donald Trump’s second term as President, one of the United States’ key strategic relationships has entered a state of crisis."

U.S.-India relations are now at their most fragile point in a quarter of a century. The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that, according to reports, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not taken a call from Donald Trump in over two months.

In recent days, Trump described U.S.-India trade relations as a “completely one-sided disaster.” Reports also suggest that he has cancelled a planned visit to India later this year, where he was expected to attend a QUAD summit  the strategic alliance involving India, the United States, Australia, and Japan.

No one had anticipated such a downturn in relations. After Trump’s election victory last year, there was a sense of optimism in New Delhi. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Trump on social media platform X, referring to him as a “friend,” and shared photos of the two leaders embracing and holding hands.

Such a deterioration in relations was unexpected. After Trump’s election victory last year, many in New Delhi had welcomed the outcome with optimism. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Trump on the social media platform X, calling him a “friend,” and shared photos of the two leaders hugging and holding hands.

At that time, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told reporters that while other countries might be “concerned” about Trump’s return, India was not.

Confident, Modi traveled to Washington to meet Trump after he took office, but the meeting did not go well.
