New symbolic move comes as U.S.–Iran tensions escalate and maritime security concerns grow over the strategic waterway

U.S. President Donald Trump has shared an altered map on social media that renames the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz as the “Strait of Trump,” sparking fresh attention amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.

The image was posted on Thursday (April 30) on Trump’s social media platform Truth Social without any caption. The map visually replaced the globally recognized name of the Strait of Hormuz with “Strait of Trump,” marking a symbolic and controversial gesture during an already sensitive geopolitical period.

Earlier, on March 27, Trump had publicly used the term “Trump Strait” during a speech, jokingly suggesting that such a renaming could become a reality. When audience members reacted with laughter, he responded by claiming that he is “rarely wrong,” adding confidence to his statement.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, connecting the Persian Gulf to the open ocean. Nearly one-fifth of global oil shipments pass through this narrow waterway, making it a key focal point in global energy security and international trade stability.

Tensions in the region have reportedly intensified over the past months, with ongoing disputes between the United States and Iran over nuclear policy and maritime control. According to international reports, Washington has maintained pressure on Tehran, insisting that Iran must abandon its nuclear program before any peace agreement can be considered.

Meanwhile, reports from U.S. media outlets suggest that Iran recently proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz as part of a broader ceasefire negotiation framework. However, the proposal was rejected by the Trump administration, which expressed dissatisfaction and maintained its position on stricter conditions.

In addition, discussions within U.S. military circles reportedly include contingency planning for limited strikes aimed at increasing pressure on Iran to return to negotiations. These developments highlight the fragile state of diplomacy in the region and the growing risks surrounding one of the world’s most vital energy corridors.

As tensions continue to rise, global observers warn that any escalation involving the Strait of Hormuz could have serious implications for international oil markets and regional stability.
