US President Donald Trump warned that Canada would face a 100% tariff on all exports to the United States if it finalises a trade agreement with China. The threat comes amid worsening US–Canada relations and Ottawa’s growing engagement with Beijing.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday warned Canada that concluding a trade deal with China would trigger a 100 percent tariff on all Canadian goods entering the United States.

Relations between the United States and Canada have remained tense since Trump returned to the White House, marked by repeated disputes over trade and foreign policy. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has previously described the situation as a “rupture” in the US-led global order.

During a visit to Beijing last week, Carney announced what he described as a “new strategic partnership” with China, resulting in a preliminary agreement aimed at reducing tariffs. Trump responded sharply, warning that Canada would face severe consequences if the deal moved forward.

“If Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods into the United States, he is sorely mistaken,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. He added that China would “completely devour” Canada’s economy, businesses, and social fabric.

Trump also referred to Carney as “Governor,” echoing his repeated claims that Canada should become the 51st US state. Earlier this week, Trump posted an image showing Canada, Greenland and Venezuela covered by the American flag.

Canada’s minister responsible for US trade, Dominic LeBlanc, rejected Trump’s claims, saying there was no pursuit of a free trade deal with China. “What was achieved was resolution on several important tariff issues,” he said in a post on X.

The exchange follows Carney’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this week, where he received a standing ovation after warning that the global economic order led by the United States was under strain.
