One year after its launch, U.S. President Donald Trump’s flagship Golden Dome missile-defense initiative has made little tangible progress, raising concerns about the future of one of his most ambitious national security projects.

The executive order establishing the Golden Dome was signed on January 27, 2025, with an aggressive goal of deploying a comprehensive homeland missile-defense system by 2028. However, despite the passage of a year, much of the $25 billion allocated to the program last summer remains unspent.

According to two U.S. officials, work on finalizing the system’s overall architecture is still ongoing, particularly regarding the role of space-based missile-tracking and interception components. These unresolved debates have delayed large-scale execution of funds, even though the money is technically available.

Officials said that significant funding could be released in the coming days once key architectural decisions are finalized. Until then, progress remains largely confined to planning and internal discussions.

Responding to questions from Reuters, a Pentagon official said the program is still aligned with the original executive order.
“The Golden Dome office continues to meet the goals outlined in the Executive Order,” the official said, adding that while the implementation plan and technologies remain dynamic, the foundational elements of the architecture have now been established. Specific details, however, remain classified.

The slow pace has prompted scrutiny from analysts and lawmakers, who warn that delays could jeopardize the 2028 deployment target and undermine confidence in the administration’s ability to deliver on its missile-defense ambitions.
