US Justice Department Probing Minnesota Governor Walz and Mayor Frey

The US Justice Department has launched a criminal inquiry into Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey to determine whether they conspired to obstruct federal immigration enforcement - a rare escalation that intersects law enforcement and politics.

According to officials familiar with the matter, the investigation is focused on whether statements made by Walz and Frey regarding thousands of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol agents deployed to the Minneapolis–St. Paul region constitute a violation of a federal conspiracy statute aimed at preventing federal officers from carrying out their duties.

The probe follows weeks of tension in Minnesota triggered by the Operation Metro Surge immigration enforcement campaign ordered by President Donald Trump, which has resulted in thousands of arrests and heightened confrontations with local communities. The deployment intensified public scrutiny especially after the fatal shooting of Renee Good, a Minnesota resident killed by an ICE agent on January 7, which sparked protests and legal challenges.

Walz and Frey have been outspoken critics of the federal operation, accusing it of creating chaos and undermining public safety. Walz described news of the investigation as “weaponizing the justice system” against political opponents, while Frey characterized the inquiry as an intimidation tactic but affirmed his focus on public safety.

Subpoenas were prepared for both officials as part of the early stages of the probe, though it has not been publicly confirmed whether they have been served. The Justice Department has declined official comment on the investigation.

Legal experts note that criminal cases of this nature, based on public statements by elected officials, are highly unusual, and it remains unclear whether the probe will lead to formal charges.
