On India’s Republic Day, Chinese President Xi Jinping described China and India as “good neighbours, friends and partners.” The message comes as the two Asian powers work to stabilise ties after years of border tensions.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has said Beijing and New Delhi are “good neighbours, friends and partners,” underlining improving relations between the two countries amid shifting global trade dynamics triggered by US tariff policies.

Xi conveyed his greetings to Indian President Droupadi Murmu on the occasion of India’s Republic Day on Monday, according to China’s state-run Xinhua news agency.

He said that over the past year, China-India relations have continued to improve and develop, adding that the relationship holds “great significance for maintaining and promoting world peace and prosperity.”

The remarks reflect a gradual reset in ties following nearly four years of strained relations after deadly border clashes in 2020, in which at least 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers were reportedly killed.

After the clashes, India imposed restrictions on Chinese investments and banned several Chinese apps, including TikTok. Despite these curbs, bilateral trade between the two neighbours continued to grow, crossing an annual volume of more than $130 billion.

Recent diplomatic engagement suggests both countries are seeking stability and cooperation as major regional powers in a rapidly changing global economic and geopolitical environment.
