A fact-checking report says disinformation about Bangladesh originating from Indian sources rose in 2025, with mainstream Indian media playing a significant role. The findings highlight a growing trend of coordinated false narratives, particularly on social media platform X.

A report published on Saturday by Rumor Scanner has warned that the spread of disinformation about Bangladesh from Indian sources is becoming increasingly alarming.

According to the report, Rumor Scanner identified at least 155 instances of disinformation related to Bangladesh in 2025 across Indian media and social platforms - nearly 5% higher than the previous year. The findings show a persistent upward trend rather than isolated incidents.

Most notably, 73 Indian mainstream news outlets were found to have published 140 misleading or false reports across 38 separate incidents involving Bangladesh last year. The report stressed that the involvement of established media outlets significantly amplifies the impact of false narratives due to their perceived credibility.

Disinformation peaked early in the year

The report found that disinformation activity was highest at the beginning of 2025. In January alone, Indian sources circulated 34 instances of disinformation, the highest number recorded in any single month. Although the frequency declined in subsequent months -reaching a low of four cases in May - the overall flow remained steady, averaging at least 13 false claims per month.

X remains the primary platform

Rumor Scanner identified X (formerly Twitter) as the dominant platform for spreading disinformation. Out of the 155 total cases, 126 instances (around 81%) were disseminated via X.

In addition, 54 instances were spread on Facebook, while other platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Threads, and TikTok were also used. Indian mainstream media contributed to at least 38 disinformation incidents, further intensifying public misinformation.

The report noted that the concentration of over 80% of disinformation on a single platform points to a structural and coordinated narrative-building effort, rather than random activity.

Rise of communal propaganda

The report also highlighted a sharp rise in communal disinformation. Of the 155 identified cases, 91 incidents (nearly 58%) involved communal narratives.

Once again, X played a central role, with at least 85 communal falsehoods circulated by Indian sources on the platform during 2025. Rumor Scanner warned that such content poses a serious risk to social harmony and public perception.

The organization concluded that digital platforms - particularly X - have become the primary vehicles for disinformation campaigns targeting Bangladesh, while the participation of mainstream media gives such falsehoods broader reach and greater influence on public opinion.
