Canada has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to advancing dignity, accountability and justice for the Rohingya community, amid ongoing international efforts to address crimes committed against them in Myanmar.
Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Ajit Singh recently met with three Rohingya individuals who are set to travel to The Hague to testify in the upcoming hearings at the International Court of Justice. The hearings are part of the landmark genocide case filed by The Gambia against Myanmar over atrocities committed against the Rohingya.
According to the Canadian High Commission, the meeting focused on the systematic persecution, violence and denial of rights faced by the Rohingya in Myanmar, as well as the critical role of international accountability mechanisms in ensuring justice.
The Rohingya representatives expressed gratitude for Canada’s continued support, particularly its role in helping ensure that Rohingya victims’ voices are heard at the ICJ. They said such backing gives hope to a community that has endured years of displacement and suffering.
High Commissioner Ajit Singh praised the courage of the Rohingya witnesses and reiterated Canada’s commitment to human rights, international justice and accountability, stressing that impunity for grave crimes cannot be allowed to persist.
Bangladesh currently hosts more than 1.3 million Rohingya refugees in camps across Cox’s Bazar and on Bhasan Char, making it one of the world’s largest refugee-hosting countries. Canada has been a long-standing supporter of humanitarian assistance and international legal efforts related to the Rohingya crisis.
Officials said Canada will continue working with international partners to support justice initiatives and improve conditions for Rohingya refugees until a safe, voluntary and dignified solution becomes possible.
