Italy has reaffirmed its support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition and the July Charter, describing the Indo-Pacific as the new centre of global gravity. Rome has also expressed interest in deepening political, economic and defence cooperation with Dhaka.

Italy’s Undersecretary for Defence Matteo Perego di Cremnago has expressed strong support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition and the July Charter, while highlighting the Indo-Pacific region as the emerging focal point of global geopolitics.

Speaking on Italy’s foreign and defence outlook, the deputy defence minister said the Indo-Pacific has become the new centre of global gravity, prompting Italy to strengthen engagement with countries in the region, including Bangladesh. He noted that Bangladesh’s growing economy presents significant opportunities for cooperation and for charting a shared strategic path in the coming days.

Perego di Cremnago said Italy views Bangladesh as an increasingly important partner in South Asia and expressed interest in expanding collaboration across defence, trade and broader political areas. He also acknowledged the positive integration of the Bangladeshi community in Italy, describing it as a constructive presence within Italian society.

However, the Italian official raised concerns over illegal migration through the Mediterranean route, stressing the need for coordinated efforts to address irregular migration while strengthening legal and structured mobility frameworks between the two countries.

Italy’s remarks signal continued diplomatic support for Bangladesh’s political transition process and reflect Rome’s broader strategy of reinforcing partnerships in the Indo-Pacific amid shifting global power dynamics.
