Ladakh erupts with demands for separate statehood

The Chronify

India’s union territory of Ladakh has been gripped by unrest amid growing demands for separate statehood. In the capital Leh, chaos has erupted as thousands of students took to the streets on Wednesday in support of activist and climate campaigner Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike. What began as a peaceful demonstration quickly spiraled out of control, plunging the region into turmoil.

Ladakh’s demand for statehood has erupted into violent clashes, leaving the region on edge. Tensions flared in Leh as protests turned confrontational, with demonstrators scuffling with police before the situation escalated into widespread violence. Protesters set fire to a CRPF vehicle, prompting the deployment of additional security forces across the city. At least five people were reportedly killed in police firing, while around 70 others were injured.

A meeting between Ladakh’s delegation and the central government is scheduled for October 6, but unrest broke out ahead of it, with large numbers of young protesters taking to the streets. Eyewitnesses said most demonstrators were students and youths chanting slogans such as “Make Ladakh a full-fledged state” and “Fulfil the Centre’s promises.” Despite baton charges and tear gas, the protests intensified, with police using force to disperse the crowds.

The Home Minister announced a high-level meeting, but Ladakh representatives claim he had already dismissed their demands, calling the decision to grant Union Territory status a mistake. This disclosure has fueled further anger, with locals directly blaming the BJP for breaking promises.

Protest leaders have declared that the movement will not stop until their demands are met. Leh’s District Magistrate Romil Singh has imposed a curfew as the mass uprising has put the BJP on the defensive. Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk emphasized that this is a Gen-Z-driven protest, denying any involvement from the Congress party.
