Russia will build four new nuclear power plants in Iran

Russia will build four new nuclear power plants in Iran at a cost of $25 billion, Iran’s state media reported on Friday. The agreement was signed between Iran Hormoz Company and Russia’s state-owned Rosatom in Sirik, located in Iran’s Hormozgan Province. Each plant will have a production capacity of 1,255 megawatts. However, no completion timeline has yet been announced.
At present, Iran operates only one nuclear power plant, located in the southern city of Bushehr. It has a production capacity of 1,000 megawatts far below the country’s electricity demand.
The new agreement comes at a time when the prospect of reinstating sweeping UN sanctions has reemerged, following calls from European nations. Britain, France, and Germany have accused Iran of failing to comply with the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal.
On Friday, China and Russia proposed at the UN Security Council to allow another six months for negotiations, though the proposal is unlikely to be approved.
Western nations have long alleged that Iran is secretly seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran, however, has repeatedly insisted its program is solely for peaceful purposes, namely civilian electricity generation.
It is worth noting that Iran and Russia signed their first nuclear agreement in 1993, which led to the construction of the Bushehr power plant. The project was originally German, but after Germany abandoned it following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Russia stepped in to complete it.
