Former Bangladesh women's cricketer Fatema Tuj Johora continues her impressive coaching journey, taking charge of the Qatar women's national team after successful stints in the Maldives and China.
Former Bangladesh women's cricketer Fatema Tuj Johora has been appointed as the new head coach of the Qatar women's cricket team, marking another significant milestone in her steadily rising international coaching career.
Although her playing career on the international stage was brief, Fatema has established herself as one of Bangladesh's most successful cricket coaches abroad, earning recognition for her dedication, expertise and ability to develop emerging talent.
Fatema made her international debut for Bangladesh in 2007. However, her journey as a player was short-lived, featuring in only three One Day Internationals before bringing her international playing career to an end. Rather than stepping away from the sport, she redirected her passion for cricket towards coaching—a decision that would eventually shape an inspiring professional path.
She spent more than a decade working at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP), the country's premier sports institute, where she developed her coaching skills and gained extensive experience in nurturing young athletes.
Her abilities were recognised early by the national setup. In 2011, she served as an assistant coach of the Bangladesh women's national team for three months. Later, in 2017, she returned to the national side as a strength and conditioning coach, contributing to the team's preparations over another four-month period.
Fatema's expertise also opened doors beyond Bangladesh. She worked on a contractual basis with cricket programmes in New South Wales, Australia, adding valuable international exposure to her coaching portfolio and broadening her understanding of modern training methodologies.
In 2022, she took on her first major overseas leadership role as head coach of the Maldives national cricket team. During her two-year tenure, she played a vital role in strengthening the team's structure and improving player development systems.
Following the completion of her Maldives assignment, Fatema embraced a new challenge in August 2024 by joining the Chinese Cricket Association as a technical coach. Her contribution in China further enhanced her reputation as a knowledgeable and adaptable cricket professional capable of working across diverse sporting environments.
Her latest appointment with Qatar represents another landmark achievement, not only for her personal career but also for Bangladesh's growing footprint in global cricket coaching.
Fatema's rise reflects the increasing recognition of Bangladeshi expertise in women's cricket development. Her journey from a former national player with a limited international career to becoming the head coach of multiple overseas teams serves as an inspiration for aspiring female athletes and coaches across the country.
As she prepares to lead Qatar's women's side into a new chapter, expectations will be high that her experience in player development and international coaching can help elevate the team's competitiveness on the regional and global stage.
For Bangladesh cricket, Fatema Tuj Johora's success stands as a testament to perseverance, continuous learning and the expanding influence of the country's sporting professionals beyond its borders.
