Bangladesh Women’s cricket team began their T20 World Cup journey with a strong six-wicket victory over the Netherlands at Edgbaston, powered by Joty and Juwairiya’s key batting performances.
The Bangladesh Women’s cricket team made a winning start to their T20 World Cup campaign with a composed six-wicket victory over the Netherlands Women in their opening Group 1 match at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The win marks a confident beginning for Bangladesh as they look to build momentum in the tournament.
Batting first after losing the toss, the Netherlands Women posted a total of 139 for 8 in their allotted overs. Despite regular breakthroughs from the Bangladeshi bowling unit, the Dutch side managed to stay competitive thanks to a solid half-century from their captain Babette de Leede, who top-scored with 50 runs. Her innings provided stability in the middle order, but the team struggled to accelerate significantly in the death overs.
Bangladesh’s bowling attack delivered a disciplined performance throughout the innings. Pacer Marufa Akter stood out with figures of 2 wickets for 31 runs, applying consistent pressure with her pace and accuracy. The fielding unit also contributed with sharp work in the outfield, preventing the Netherlands from building large partnerships or gaining late momentum.
Chasing 140 for victory, Bangladesh Women began aggressively and immediately put pressure on the Dutch bowling attack. The opening partnership between Dilara Akter and Juwairiya Ferdous proved decisive, as the pair added 67 runs in just 7.5 overs, setting a strong foundation for the chase.
Juwairiya Ferdous played a standout innings at the top of the order, scoring 50 runs off just 33 balls. Her aggressive stroke play included seven boundaries and two sixes, helping Bangladesh stay ahead of the required run rate from the outset. Her dismissal in the eighth over came immediately after she had anchored the innings, but by then she had already placed her team in a commanding position.
Shortly after, captain Nigar Sultana was dismissed, followed by the wicket of Dilara Akter, who scored a valuable 26 off 23 balls. These quick wickets briefly slowed Bangladesh’s momentum, reducing them to 79 for 3 in 10.2 overs and creating a potential opening for the Netherlands to fight back.
However, the middle order responded with composure. Sobhana Mostary briefly contributed before being dismissed, but it was the partnership between Sharmin Akter and Swarna Akter that ultimately secured the win for Bangladesh. The duo added an unbeaten 56-run stand, guiding the team safely toward the target with controlled batting and smart strike rotation.
Sharmin Akter remained unbeaten on 37 off 32 deliveries, while Swarna Akter finished not out on 18 off 17 balls. Their partnership ensured that Bangladesh reached the target with five balls to spare, sealing a comfortable finish despite a brief mid-innings wobble.
The Netherlands, although competitive in patches, were unable to contain Bangladesh’s top and middle order once the chase gained momentum. Their bowling unit struggled to apply consistent pressure, particularly during the opening partnership that set the tone for the innings.
For Bangladesh, the victory provides an important confidence boost at the start of a challenging group stage. With stronger opponents ahead, maintaining consistency in both batting and bowling will be key to progressing further in the tournament.
Bangladesh Women will next face Australia Women in their second group match at Headingley on Wednesday. The upcoming fixture is expected to be significantly more challenging, and the team will aim to carry forward the positive momentum from this opening win into the next encounter.
