Mississippi Residents Sue xAI and SpaceX Over Data Center Noise and “Nuisance” Claims

A class-action lawsuit alleges Elon Musk-linked companies caused constant noise, vibrations, and health impacts linked to nearby AI infrastructure operations.
Residents in Mississippi have filed a class-action lawsuit against xAI and SpaceX, alleging that industrial operations supporting artificial intelligence data centres have created severe noise pollution, vibrations, and long-term disturbances affecting their health and property values.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Oxford, Mississippi, claims that a power facility supplying energy to nearby data centres produces “omnipresent and inescapable” noise. Plaintiffs argue that the ongoing disturbance has turned residential neighbourhoods into environments that are no longer suitable for normal living conditions.
Three residents initiated the case on behalf of a proposed class that lawyers estimate could include more than 10,000 people living in affected areas. The complaint alleges negligence and public nuisance, arguing that the companies failed to take adequate steps to reduce or control the environmental impact of their operations.
According to the filing, the rapid expansion of AI-related infrastructure has significantly increased industrial activity in the region, with gas-fired turbines reportedly used to power large-scale computing facilities. Residents say the resulting noise and vibration are continuous and disruptive, affecting sleep, wellbeing, and daily life.
The plaintiffs are seeking financial compensation for alleged emotional distress, reduced property values, and other damages. They are also requesting disgorgement of profits earned from the operations they say are causing the disturbance.
A lawyer representing the residents, Robert Wiygul, stated that homes should function as safe and peaceful environments, but argued that constant industrial noise has undermined that basic expectation. The lawsuit frames the issue as part of a broader concern about the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure across the United States without sufficient local safeguards.
The companies named in the case did not immediately issue public responses to the allegations. A related subsidiary, MZX Tech, is also listed as a defendant in the complaint. Elon Musk is not personally named in the lawsuit.
The case also references broader environmental and regulatory scrutiny surrounding the facility. Earlier, the NAACP filed a separate lawsuit against xAI over environmental concerns linked to the same infrastructure project, and that case is still ongoing. The US Department of Justice has reportedly indicated it may become involved in reviewing legal questions related to AI infrastructure development.
The Mississippi case adds to a growing wave of legal and community pushback against large-scale AI data centre projects, which critics argue are expanding faster than local environmental and zoning systems can regulate.
