5 Bangladeshi students expelled from Assam’s NIT
Five Bangladeshi students have been expelled from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Silchar, Assam, for their alleged involvement in a violent campus clash. All five were studying at NIT under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship.
NIT Director Prof. Dilip Kumar Baidya said on Sunday that there was sufficient evidence proving the students’ active role in the violence inside the campus. As punishment, they have been suspended for two semesters and expelled from their hostels. Since they cannot attend classes during this period, they will soon be sent back to Bangladesh.
The incident occurred on the night of September 9, when a group of third-year Bangladeshi students allegedly attacked senior final-year Bangladeshi students inside hostel room 206. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers, under the influence of drugs, used iron rods, knives, and screwdrivers to assault their compatriots for nearly 30 minutes, leaving several injured. Two students sustained severe head injuries and were admitted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
NIT authorities later recovered narcotics from one of the accused students’ rooms and weapons from another. While no police case (FIR) has been filed yet, the institution carried out its own investigation. An ICCR official from the Guwahati zone also visited the campus to review the situation.
