The government has proposed allocating Tk300 crore in the upcoming national budget to provide housing assistance to families of those killed during the July Uprising and permanently incapacitated July fighters. Monthly allowances for martyrs' families and injured participants will also continue, while the number of beneficiaries is set to expand significantly.

The government has proposed a Tk300 crore allocation in the 2026-27 national budget to provide housing support for families affected by the July Uprising, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and rehabilitation of those who sacrificed during one of the country's most significant political movements.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury unveiled the proposal while presenting the national budget, outlining a series of measures aimed at strengthening financial security and long-term social protection for the families of those killed and individuals injured during the uprising.

Under the proposed budget, families of those recognised as martyrs of the July Uprising will continue to receive a monthly allowance of Tk20,000. The government also plans to maintain existing support for injured participants based on the severity of their injuries.

According to the proposal, individuals classified under Category A will continue to receive Tk20,000 per month, while those under Category B and Category C will receive monthly allowances of Tk15,000 and Tk10,000 respectively.

Although the allowance structure remains unchanged, the government intends to significantly broaden the programme's reach. The number of beneficiaries is expected to increase by 1,857 in the next fiscal year, raising the total number of recipients to 16,513.

Officials said the expansion reflects the administration's intention to ensure that more affected families and injured participants receive continued financial assistance as they rebuild their lives.

Beyond direct cash support, the proposed budget places considerable emphasis on long-term rehabilitation through improved housing facilities.

As part of an ongoing rehabilitation initiative, Tk300 crore has been earmarked to provide housing assistance to the families of those who lost their lives during the July Uprising, as well as to the families of July fighters who have permanently lost their earning capacity due to injuries sustained during the movement.

The finance minister said the housing programme aims not only to improve living conditions but also to recognise the sacrifices made by those who played a role in the uprising.

"The proposed measures are intended to strengthen the social safety net and ensure that affected families receive both immediate financial support and sustainable rehabilitation opportunities," he said while outlining the budgetary provisions.

The July Uprising left hundreds of families facing economic hardship after losing primary income earners or caring for family members with life-altering injuries. The continuation of monthly allowances and the expansion of housing assistance are being viewed as part of a broader effort to address those challenges through state support.

The proposed allocation highlights the government's continued focus on honouring the contributions and sacrifices of July Uprising victims through comprehensive welfare programmes. If approved by parliament, the initiatives will take effect in the upcoming fiscal year beginning on July 1.

The measures are expected to provide relief to thousands of households while reinforcing the state's commitment to standing beside families who continue to bear the consequences of the historic movement.
