Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has announced that nearly 450,000 primary school students across Bangladesh will receive school uniforms by July as part of broader efforts to make education more engaging, inclusive, and skill-oriented.
The government has announced that approximately 450,000 primary school students across Bangladesh will receive school uniforms by July, marking another step in its efforts to improve the quality and accessibility of education nationwide.
Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon made the announcement on Saturday while inaugurating the newly constructed four-storey Bishweshwar Poddar Building at Panchamighat High School in Sonargaon, Narayanganj.
The minister said the initiative is part of a wider strategy aimed at creating a more effective, enjoyable, and student-friendly learning environment, particularly at the primary education level.
"The government has undertaken a range of initiatives, including expanding multimedia classrooms and introducing sports and debate clubs in educational institutions, to make primary education more effective and enjoyable," he said.
Emphasising the need to rethink traditional approaches to learning, Milon stated that education should extend beyond academic grades and examination results.
"Education is not just about studying textbooks and achieving GPA-5; it must be enjoyable and skill-oriented," the minister said. "Work is underway to revise and update school textbooks to better meet the needs of modern learners."
According to the minister, the distribution of school uniforms is expected to ease the financial burden on many families while also promoting a greater sense of equality and belonging among students in educational institutions.
The announcement comes as the government pursues a series of reforms intended to modernise the country's education system and better prepare young people for future challenges.
Milon revealed that authorities are also considering the introduction of third-language education in schools to enhance students' global competitiveness and communication skills in an increasingly interconnected world.
In addition, the government plans to place stronger emphasis on technical and vocational education, recognising the importance of equipping Bangladesh's large youth population with practical skills relevant to the evolving job market.
He noted that transforming the country's demographic advantage into a skilled workforce remains one of the government's major priorities.
"Our goal is to turn our vast population into capable and productive human resources who can contribute effectively to national development," he said.
The education minister further disclosed that discussions are underway regarding the formulation of a policy for the nationalisation of century-old educational institutions, acknowledging the historical significance and contribution of many long-established schools across the country.
Education experts have long argued that improving learning outcomes requires a balanced approach that combines academic achievement with extracurricular engagement, creativity, critical thinking, and life skills development.
The government's latest initiatives—including multimedia classrooms, student clubs, curriculum revisions, and uniform distribution—reflect a broader vision of creating a more inclusive and holistic education system.
The inauguration ceremony in Sonargaon was attended by local officials, teachers, students, guardians, and community leaders, many of whom welcomed the government's focus on improving educational facilities and expanding opportunities for learners.
As Bangladesh continues to invest in its education sector, policymakers hope these measures will help build a generation of confident, skilled, and socially responsible citizens capable of contributing to the country's future growth and development.
