A major rescue operation is underway in the Moroccan city of Fez after two adjacent residential buildings collapsed early Wednesday in the Al-Mostaqbal neighbourhood, killing at least 22 people and injuring 16 others.

Footage from the aftermath shows Civil Defence teams working tirelessly through the debris, supported by emergency medical staff and multiple ambulances. Residents from nearby areas gathered around the scene in large numbers as rescue personnel continued digging through the rubble in search of survivors.

Authorities in Fez confirmed the casualty figures in an official statement, noting that their immediate priority is to secure the surrounding area to prevent further danger. Precautionary evacuations have already been ordered in neighbouring buildings that may have been structurally affected by the collapse.

In a parallel move, the Moroccan Public Prosecution announced that it has directed the judicial police to open a full investigation under its direct supervision. The inquiry aims to determine the exact cause of the collapse and uncover all related circumstances that may have contributed to the tragic incident.

Local officials, engineers, and investigators are continuing to assess the stability of the wider area as rescue teams work around the clock.
