Aiming for Space Economy: Bangladesh Plans Rockets, Satellites, and a Space Industrial Park
The Chronify
Bangladesh is setting its sights on joining the global space economy with an ambitious plan to develop its own rockets, satellites, and a dedicated space industrial park. The Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organisation (SPARRSO) has commissioned a feasibility study to explore the possibilities of launching these projects, with the report expected by June 2026.
The study, contracted to Development Design Consultants Limited for Tk1.35 crore, will examine three key components: a rocket manufacturing and launch station, a satellite manufacturing industry with an Assembly, Integration, and Test (AIT) laboratory, and the establishment of a space industrial park.
This move aims to enhance Bangladesh’s space capabilities, reduce dependency on foreign technology, and generate revenue through satellite launches and space research. If successful, the country will be able to reduce costs, foster innovation, and create high-tech jobs.
Sparrso officials are considering coastal sites in Patuakhali, Chattogram, and the Sundarbans for the launch station, which could also support scientific missions and boost national security. The satellite manufacturing facility will focus on reducing reliance on foreign suppliers and creating export opportunities for space-grade components.
Moreover, the planned space industrial park will serve as a hub for research, engineering, and commercial space applications, fostering international collaborations and attracting investors. This initiative aims to strengthen Bangladesh's presence in the trillion-dollar global space market.
Experts believe the project is highly ambitious but achievable with significant investment, advanced technology, and collaboration with countries like China, Japan, and South Korea. As Bangladesh moves forward with this plan, it seeks to position itself as a key player in the emerging space economy.
