Ahmed al Ahmed, celebrated for disarming a gunman during the Bondi Beach mass shooting, has been handed over A$2.5 million (about US $1.65 million) raised by global donors. The award was presented while he recovers in hospital after being wounded in the attack.
Ahmed al Ahmed, a Syrian-born Australian widely hailed as the “Bondi Hero,” has been presented with A$2.5 million (US $1.65 million) raised through a global GoFundMe campaign after he courageously intervened in a deadly mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney.
The cheque was handed to Ahmed at his St. George Hospital bed by social media influencer Zachery Dereniowski, who co-organized the fundraiser. More than 43,000 people worldwide contributed, including billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, who donated A$99,999 and helped amplify support by promoting the campaign online.
On the day of the attack, Ahmed hid behind parked cars before charging at one of the gunmen, seizing the weapon and knocking the assailant to the ground. He suffered gunshot wounds from a second attacker and remains hospitalized after surgery.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the New South Wales Premier both visited Ahmed in hospital to praise his bravery. In response to receiving the funds, Ahmed expressed humility and urged unity and humanity among all people, emphasizing the need to focus on saving lives.
The tragic shooting occurred during a Hanukkah celebration at the popular beach, leaving around 15 people dead and dozens injured, prompting national mourning and renewed conversations about public safety.
