The Norwegian royal household says Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s health has deteriorated in recent months. Doctors are preparing for a lung transplant as her chronic lung disease progresses.

Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit is expected to undergo a lung transplant following a significant decline in her health, the royal household announced on Friday. The 52-year-old wife of Crown Prince Haakon, heir to the Norwegian throne, has been battling pulmonary fibrosis since being diagnosed in 2018.

Pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic condition that causes scarring of the lungs, leading to reduced oxygen intake and breathing difficulties. In a statement, the palace said medical tests conducted over the autumn showed a “clear negative development” in the crown princess’s health.

While it has not yet been decided when Mette-Marit will be placed on the transplant waiting list, medical preparations are already underway. Professor Are Martin Holm of Oslo University Hospital’s pulmonary unit said doctors are approaching the point where a lung transplant will be necessary and are ensuring everything is in place for when the time comes.

The royal household said further updates would be provided as decisions are made, as the crown princess continues to receive close medical care.
