At least 13 people lost their lives and 98 others were injured when the Interoceanic Train derailed in Mexico’s southern state of Oaxaca, according to officials.

In response, the navy deployed a large emergency operation, sending 360 personnel, 20 vehicles, four ground ambulances, three air ambulances and a tactical drone to assist with search, rescue and passenger tracking efforts, TRT Word reports.

The navy said it remains committed to public safety and is working closely with relevant authorities to determine the cause of the derailment.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the casualty figures in a social media statement, noting that five of the injured were in serious condition. She said the wounded were receiving treatment at IMSS hospitals in Matías Romero and Salina Cruz, as well as IMSS-Bienestar facilities in Juchitán and Ixtepec.

The president added that she had instructed the Secretary of the Navy and the undersecretary for human rights at the Interior Ministry to travel to the scene to assist victims’ families. The Interior Ministry will oversee coordination of the response, she said, thanking the Oaxaca state government for its support and promising further updates as the situation develops.
