Police have arrested 10 individuals in Munshiganj's Mirkadim area on allegations of preparing to carry out a robbery. Authorities recovered a speedboat, sharp weapons, mobile phones and other items believed to have been intended for use in the planned operation.
Law enforcement authorities have arrested ten individuals in Munshiganj on allegations that they were preparing to commit a robbery in a riverine area of the district, police officials said on Saturday.
The suspects were detained during a late-night operation conducted in the Mirkadim area of Munshiganj Sadar upazila, specifically at the confluence of the Dhaleshwari River and the entrance to the Dohori Canal.
According to a press release issued by Md Abdul Mabud, Inspector-in-Charge of the Muktarpur River Police Outpost, the arrests took place on the night of June 12 following intelligence gathered during an ongoing investigation into criminal activities in the region.
The arrested individuals were identified as Saddam Hossain, 38; Borhan Uddin, 28; Md Roman, 23; Tara Mia, 38; Yunus Ali, 38; Ismail Hossain, 27; Abdur Rahman, 27; Sulaiman, 34; Sharif Hossain, 32; and Md Arman, 23.
Police alleged that the group had assembled in the area with the intention of carrying out a robbery, taking advantage of the strategic river route frequently used by boats and vessels operating in and around Munshiganj.
During the operation, officers seized several items that investigators believe were intended to be used in the planned criminal act.
The recovered items included a high-speed engine-powered boat, two sharp machetes, seven wooden clubs, six mobile phones, and two torchlights.
Authorities said the seizure of the equipment indicated that the suspects had made preparations before allegedly attempting to execute the robbery.
Inspector Abdul Mabud stated that the operation was conducted based on information obtained from two individuals suspected of involvement in river piracy who had earlier been detained from the Laskardi area of Gazaria upazila.
"Based on information obtained from those suspects, we arrested these 10 individuals," he said.
Police have not disclosed whether the group had targeted any specific vessel or business establishment. Investigators are now examining whether the suspects are linked to previous incidents of robbery and criminal activities along the waterways of the region.
A case has been filed with Munshiganj Sadar Police Station in connection with the incident, and legal proceedings against the accused are currently underway.
River routes remain vital transportation corridors for both passengers and commercial activities in many parts of Bangladesh. However, law enforcement agencies have periodically reported incidents involving river-based robberies, prompting increased surveillance and security operations in vulnerable areas.
Officials said efforts to curb organised criminal activities on waterways will continue, with intelligence-driven operations being intensified to ensure the safety of passengers, traders, and local communities dependent on river transport.
The latest arrests underscore the authorities' ongoing commitment to tackling river crime and maintaining law and order across Bangladesh's extensive network of inland waterways.
Investigators are expected to question the suspects further as they seek to determine the full extent of the alleged group's activities and identify whether additional individuals may have been involved in the planned robbery.
