Bangladesh Sends First Hilsa Shipment to India

Ahead of Durga Puja, the first shipment of 50 tons of Hilsa fish from Bangladesh arrived in India on 10 trucks at the Petrapole border. Kartik Chakraborty, Secretary of the Petrapole Clearing Agent and Staff Welfare Association, confirmed the arrival.

On Wednesday, the first consignment of the season was officially received at the Petrapole border by Sikdar Mohammad Ashraful Rahman, Acting Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Kolkata, and Sabrina Chowdhury, First Secretary (Trade).

The Bangladesh government has granted permission this year to 37 companies to export 1,200 tons of Hilsa to India. According to fisheries traders, Bangladesh Hilsa is expected to reach markets in Kolkata and neighboring districts later this week.

Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about completing the approved export quantity of 1,200 tons by the October 5 deadline. Syed Anwar Maksud, Secretary of the West Bengal Fish Importers’ Association, told reporters that in recent years the short time frame
