Bangladesh's Recent Fires Raise Questions Over Safety and Intent
The Chronify
The recent spate of deadly fires in Dhaka and Chattogram has raised alarm over safety measures, with many suspecting deliberate sabotage that could tarnish Bangladesh's reputation and harm its business environment.
Dhaka, October 19, 2025 – A series of devastating fires in Bangladesh have prompted concerns about the country's safety standards and the possibility of deliberate arson. Three major fires in just one week have claimed 16 lives and caused billions in damages, sparking debates over whether these incidents were mere accidents or acts of sabotage aimed at destabilizing the economy.
The first fire, on October 14, tore through a chemical warehouse and garment factory in Dhaka’s Mirpur, killing 16 people. Just two days later, another deadly blaze erupted at a factory in Chattogram. The most recent fire, on October 18, took place at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport’s cargo village, disrupting flight operations and damaging goods worth billions.
Business leaders, politicians, and experts are calling for thorough investigations into the possibility of arson, urging that sabotage be seriously considered. Experts have warned that these incidents have severely damaged Bangladesh’s international image and may deter foreign investors, further harming the country’s economy.
Economist Dr. Mahfuz Kabir emphasized the international attention these fires have attracted, stating, "The airport fire was widely covered by international media, causing an image crisis that may deter businesses from using the cargo facility in the future."
The interim government has formed a committee to assess the damage and has promised to take swift action to prevent future incidents
