A Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) member died after shooting himself with his service weapon inside a border outpost in Kurigram’s Phulbari upazila early Friday. Authorities say family-related issues may have contributed to the incident.

A Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) member has died after reportedly committing suicide inside a BGB camp at the Gangarhat border outpost in Phulbari upazila of Kurigram district.

The deceased was identified as Sepoy Md Nasim Uddin (23), who was serving under the 15 BGB Lalmirhat Battalion. The incident occurred around 12:45am while he was on routine night duty.

According to BGB sources, Nasim Uddin left for duty wearing his uniform between midnight and 7:00am. During this time, he went to the eastern side of the soldiers’ barracks inside the camp boundary and fired a single round from his issued firearm, hitting himself in the right side of the chest.

Fellow BGB members rushed him to Phulbari Upazila Health Complex in critical condition, where the on-duty physician declared him dead.

Confirming the incident, Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam, commanding officer of the 15 BGB Battalion, said initial investigations suggest that the sepoy may have taken his own life due to family-related problems.

“He had recently returned from leave taken to visit his family. After returning to duty, he reportedly committed suicide,” the commander said, adding that an internal inquiry is underway.

Nasim Uddin was the son of Babul Mondol and hailed from Khajura village in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila.

Following the incident, Subedar Md Jahangir Hossain of the Gangarhat Border Outpost filed an unnatural death case with Phulbari Police Station on Friday morning.

Law enforcement agencies and BGB authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
