Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus urged citizens to uphold the ideals of the 1969 Mass Uprising to build a truly democratic society. He paid tribute to the martyrs whose sacrifices shaped Bangladesh’s freedom movements.

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Thursday called upon all citizens to unite in building a genuinely democratic social system inspired by the values of the 1969 Mass Uprising.

“Let us all dedicate ourselves to building a truly democratic social system respecting the values of the 1969 mass uprising,” he said in a message issued on the occasion of 1969 Mass Uprising Day, to be observed tomorrow.

He described the 1969 Mass Uprising as a crucial chapter in Bangladesh’s long struggle for freedom and independence. According to him, the nation’s independence was achieved through a series of historic movements, including the Language Movement of 1952, the Six-Point Movement, the Eleven-Point Movement, the 1969 Mass Uprising and the Liberation War of 1971.

Prof Yunus said January 1969 was marked by intense unrest as people rose against dictatorial rule and oppression of the time. With spontaneous participation from students and people of all classes and professions, the movement culminated in a massive uprising on January 24.

He noted that protesters defied repression by breaking curfews and taking to the streets. During one such procession, ninth-grade student Motiur Rahman Mollick of Dhaka’s Nabakumar Institute was martyred in police firing.

He also recalled that Makbul, Anwar, Rustam, Milon, Alamgir and many others were killed during the movement. Prof Yunus said the sacrifices of these martyrs - from past democratic struggles to the July Uprising of 2024 - continue to inspire and empower the youth of Bangladesh.

The chief adviser offered prayers for the departed souls of all martyrs of the liberation struggle and expressed his deepest respect for those who laid down their lives during the 1969 Mass Uprising.
