The High Court has granted six months’ bail to a detained Chhatra League leader on humanitarian grounds following the deaths of his wife and nine-month-old son. The denial of parole earlier had triggered widespread criticism on social media.

The High Court on Monday granted six months’ bail to Jewel Hasan Saddam, president of the Bagerhat Sadar Upazila unit of the banned Chhatra League, following the deaths of his wife and nine-month-old infant son.

A High Court bench comprising Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan issued the bail order on January 26. Saddam’s lawyer, Saeed Ahmed Raja, told reporters that the court granted bail on humanitarian grounds.

Saddam has been in detention in connection with multiple cases and has been held at Jessore Central Jail since his arrest in Gopalganj following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024.

On the evening of January 24, jail authorities allowed Saddam to see the bodies of his deceased wife and infant son for only five minutes at the gate of Jessore Central Jail, after authorities denied him parole. An ambulance transported the bodies to the jail gate.

According to prison officials, the ambulance arrived at around 7:00pm, and at about 7:30pm, six close relatives were allowed to enter the jail gate with the vehicle. They were asked to leave after five minutes.

Eyewitnesses said 12 to 15 relatives arrived at the jail in two microbuses, while family members waiting outside broke down in tears, creating a heart-rending scene in the presence of journalists.

Earlier on Friday afternoon, police recovered the hanging body of Saddam’s wife, Kaniz Survana Swarnali, from their home in Bekhedanga village of Bagerhat Sadar Upazila. The body of their nine-month-old son, Nazim, was also found nearby.

Police and family members believe Swarnali killed the child before taking her own life, possibly due to depression. The refusal to grant Saddam parole before the funeral sparked widespread outrage and criticism on social media.
