In a major technological shift for the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election, the Election Commission has dispatched postal ballots to over half a million domestic voters via the “Postal Vote BD” app.

The Election Commission (EC) hit a significant milestone on Saturday, completing the dispatch of postal ballots to 518,603 registered domestic voters by 11:30 am. According to Salim Ahmad Khan, Team Leader of the OCV-SDI project, the digital transition is already yielding results; approximately 7,367 domestic voters have received their materials, with 4,902 having already exercised their franchise. These voters include election officials, government employees stationed outside their home districts, and individuals in legal custody.

The “Postal Vote BD” app has proven equally vital for the Bangladeshi diaspora, with 458,059 expatriates already casting their votes. EC data reveals that over 766,000 ballots were sent to foreign destinations, and 144,860 completed ballots have already made the return journey to Bangladesh. This marks the first time such an extensive IT-supported voting system has been utilized to facilitate participation for the millions of Bangladeshis living abroad.

Altogether, 1,533,684 voters at home and abroad registered through the app to participate in the February 12 general election and the referendum on the July Charter. With the election date approaching, the EC is working to ensure that all submitted ballots reach the respective returning officers in time for the official count.
