The government has announced a Tk 5 million reward for information leading to the arrest of those involved in the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Manch and a potential independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election.

The announcement was made by Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Saturday (December 13) after an emergency meeting of the Core Committee on law and order at the Secretariat.

Speaking to journalists, the adviser said the government is determined to bring the perpetrators to justice. “Anyone who helps identify or arrest those responsible for the attack on Osman Hadi will receive a reward of Tk 5 million,” he said. He also urged the public to pray for Hadi, noting that he remains in critical condition. “By the grace of Allah and everyone’s prayers, we hope he will recover,” he added.

Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said ensuring the safety of July movement front-line activists, including Osman Hadi, has become a priority. The meeting placed special emphasis on strengthening security for leaders associated with the movement amid rising political tensions ahead of the national election.

He further stated that recent attacks are aimed at disrupting the electoral process, warning that the interim government will respond with a firm hand. “Those responsible for such violence will be arrested without delay and brought under the law,” he said.

The adviser also confirmed that operations are ongoing to recover looted weapons, and announced the immediate launch of ‘Devil Hunt Phase–2’, a security operation aimed at stabilising the situation and preventing further violence.

Addressing election-related security concerns, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said licensed firearms would be returned to eligible individuals participating in the election, and candidates would be allowed to retain personal weapons if they apply. A special committee has also been formed to oversee election security nationwide.

Regarding the safety of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, the home affairs adviser said all necessary measures would be taken to ensure his security. “There is no concern regarding his safety,” he said.

Authorities say investigations into the attack on Osman Hadi are ongoing, and further updates will be shared as developments occur.
