Habibur, Two Others Sentenced to Death in Chankharpul Crimes Against Humanity Case

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 has sentenced former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman and two senior police officials to death over crimes against humanity committed during the July–August 2024 mass uprising. Five other accused received varying jail terms.
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on Sunday convicted and sentenced three former senior police officials, including ex-Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Habibur Rahman, to death in the Chankharpul crimes against humanity case.
The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, delivered the verdict at 12:35pm in a packed courtroom. Alongside Habibur Rahman, former DMP joint commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty and former additional deputy commissioner Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam were also sentenced to death. The tribunal ordered confiscation of their properties.
In addition, former assistant commissioner of DMP’s Ramna Zone Mohammad Imrul was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment, former inspector Md Arshad Hossain to four years, and former constables Md Sujon, Imaj Hossain Emon, and Nasirul Islam to three years’ imprisonment each.
The case relates to crimes against humanity committed in the Chankharpul area of Dhaka on August 5, 2024, during the July–August Mass Uprising, in which six people were killed. The victims were Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Zunayed, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawlader, Md Ismamul Haque, and Manik Miah.
The prosecution submitted the formal charge against all eight accused on May 25, 2025-the first such charge filed at the ICT in cases arising from the mass uprising. The tribunal’s investigation agency had earlier submitted a 90-page probe report on April 20, 2025.
