The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 is scheduled to deliver its verdict tomorrow in a case concerning crimes against humanity committed in Dhaka’s Chankharpul area during the mass uprising on August 5, 2024, which left six people dead.
The verdict was initially set for January 20 but was later rescheduled for January 26 after the tribunal said it could not complete preparations within the earlier timeframe.
The accused in the case are former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Habibur Rahman, former DMP joint commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former additional deputy commissioner Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam, former assistant commissioner of DMP’s Ramna zone Mohammad Imrul, former inspector Md Arshad Hossain, and constables Md Sujon, Imaj Hossain Emon, and Nasirul Islam.
Among them, the first four accused have not yet been arrested and are being tried in absentia, according to tribunal officials.
The prosecution submitted formal charges against all eight accused on May 25, marking the first formal charge filed by the ICT in cases stemming from the July-August mass uprising.
The six victims - Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Zunayed, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawlader, Md Ismamul Haque, and Manik Miah - were killed in Chankharpul on the day of the incident.
