Local Government Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan said the upcoming referendum is a historic opportunity to implement the aspirations born from the July Mass Uprising. He urged officials to ensure free, fair and impartial elections so people can exercise their voting rights without fear.
Adviser to the Ministries of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Industries, and Housing and Public Works Adilur Rahman Khan said on Friday that the July Charter was written with the blood of martyrs, calling the upcoming referendum a crucial moment in the country’s democratic journey.
“The opportunity to implement the aspirations born through the sacrifice of the martyrs has come through the referendum. This is not an ordinary vote; it is extremely important,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at a view-sharing meeting with district-level officials at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room in Rangpur.
Recalling the region’s history, Adilur said the Sanyasi Rebellion and the legacy of Nurul Din had taught people to stand against injustice. He said Bangladesh would move forward on the path shown by martyr Abu Sayeed during the July Mass Uprising of 2024.
He alleged that for the past 15 years, people were deprived of their right to vote freely. “In the upcoming elections, people will be able to vote for the symbol of their choice without fear,” he said, urging government officials to perform their duties with fairness and neutrality so voters are not subjected to intimidation or violence as in the past.
Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works Md Nazrul Islam said the nation has endured prolonged injustice, oppression and elections without genuine participation. “It is our collective responsibility to come out of this darkness and implement reforms to safeguard independence and sovereignty,” he said.
Secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development and Cooperatives Mohd Shawkat Rashid Chowdhury said many lives were sacrificed during the July uprising, adding that those sacrifices would only be fulfilled through the proper implementation of the July Charter.
