Dhaka’s first east-west metro corridor to cut travel time significantly and ease urban congestion
The government is moving forward with plans to extend metro rail services from Bhatara to Hemayetpur, marking a major step in expanding Dhaka’s urban transport network. The project is part of the MRT Line-5, which will connect densely populated eastern and western parts of the capital.
Officials involved in the project said the 20-kilometre route is being developed in 10 construction packages, combining both underground and elevated sections. Work on the Hemayetpur depot is progressing rapidly, with around 78 percent of land development already completed. The route is expected to be operational by 2030.
Known as the “Northern Route,” the corridor will be Dhaka’s first east-west metro line, featuring a total of 14 stations, including nine underground stops. Key underground stations will be located in areas such as Gabtoli, Mirpur, Banani, Gulshan-2, and Notun Bazar, while elevated stations will include Hemayetpur, Aminbazar, and Bhatara.
Once completed, the metro line is projected to carry up to 1.23 million passengers daily. Each train will have the capacity to transport 3,088 passengers, with an hourly capacity of over 53,000 in both directions. The journey from Bhatara to Hemayetpur is expected to take just 32 minutes, significantly reducing travel time compared to current road conditions.
The total estimated cost of the project stands at Tk 41,238.55 crore. Of this, Tk 29,117.05 crore will be financed by Japan International Cooperation Agency, while the remaining Tk 12,121.50 crore will be covered by the government.
Project Director Abdul Matin Chowdhury said that construction will prioritize quality and environmental sustainability. Measures such as continuous welded rails and sound barrier walls will be used to minimize noise and vibration in elevated sections.
Authorities believe the project will play a crucial role in reducing traffic congestion, improving connectivity, and enhancing the overall efficiency of Dhaka’s transportation system.
