Panchagarh experienced its coldest morning of the season as the minimum temperature dropped to 6.8 degrees Celsius, accompanied by dense fog and biting cold. Weather officials say a moderate cold wave is currently sweeping across the district.

Panchagarh shivered under intense winter conditions on Friday morning as the district recorded its lowest temperature of the season at 6.8 degrees Celsius, according to the Tetulia Weather Observation Centre.

The temperature was recorded at 9:00am, and later confirmed by the Meteorological Office as the season’s lowest so far. Officials noted that temperatures ranging between 6.1°C and 8°C fall under a moderate cold wave, which is now affecting the region.

Dense fog blanketed Panchagarh throughout the night and persisted into the morning, drastically reducing visibility on roads and pathways. The fog was so thick that it resembled heavy rainfall, forcing drivers to keep their headlights on well into daylight hours.

Just a day earlier, the district recorded a minimum temperature of 9.2°C, while the maximum stood at 18.5°C, highlighting the sharp drop overnight.

Over the past few days, winter severity has steadily increased, disrupting daily life. The cold intensifies after sunset, while fog continues to linger until late morning, with little sunlight breaking through.

Low-income and working-class residents are among the worst affected. Many day labourers are struggling to reach workplaces on time due to poor visibility and cold conditions. To keep warm, residents in several areas have resorted to burning straw and firewood.

Senior observer Jitendranath Roy of the Tetulia Weather Observation Centre said humidity stood at 100 percent, with wind speeds of 10–12 kilometres per hour. He warned that similar cold conditions are likely to persist throughout January, urging people to take necessary precautions.

Meteorologists have advised residents, especially children and the elderly, to limit exposure during early morning and nighttime hours as the cold wave continues.
