Prime Minister highlights modernization plans for military and police, reaffirms commitment to UN peacekeeping missions, and honors fallen peacekeepers at Dhaka Cantonment ceremony.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called on members of Bangladesh’s armed forces to maintain strict professionalism, discipline, unity, and respect for the chain of command in order to preserve the dignity and honour of the military.

He made the remarks on 10 June at a programme marking the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers held at Senakunja in Dhaka Cantonment, where he also paid tribute to Bangladeshi peacekeepers who lost their lives in international missions.

During the ceremony, the Prime Minister stressed that the armed forces remain a symbol of the country’s independence, courage, and national pride. He said Bangladesh’s military has earned global recognition through its long-standing participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations, but warned that attempts have been made at different times to undermine its reputation both domestically and internationally.

Referring to historical events, he noted that Bangladesh’s armed forces have faced challenges that tested their unity and resilience. He emphasized that overcoming such difficulties had strengthened institutional integrity over time, while also urging personnel to remain alert against any future efforts to damage the force’s image.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the government’s ongoing plans to modernize the armed forces and police, particularly to enhance their capacity for UN peacekeeping missions and other international duties. He said global peacekeeping has become increasingly complex due to evolving security challenges, including cyber warfare, misinformation campaigns, misuse of artificial intelligence, and climate-related threats.

“Future peacekeeping missions must be more modern, visionary, and technology-based,” he said, adding that Bangladesh remains firmly committed to supporting global peace, stability, and humanitarian efforts.

At the event, Tarique Rahman paid special tribute to six Bangladeshi army personnel who were killed in Sudan in 2025 while serving in UN peacekeeping operations. He handed over honours to their family members, acknowledging their sacrifice for international peace.

He also recognized injured peacekeepers who were wounded during overseas missions, commending their courage and dedication.

The Prime Minister reiterated that Bangladesh, as a sovereign nation, will continue to uphold the principles of independence, mutual respect, and global cooperation. He urged all members of public service, including the armed forces and civil administration, to remain committed to performing their duties responsibly for the nation’s progress.

The ceremony concluded with renewed assurances of Bangladesh’s continued engagement in UN peacekeeping operations and its long-term commitment to international peace and security efforts.
