Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury says police are servants of the state, not any political party. He stresses neutrality, public trust and strict adherence to the rule of law, especially during elections.
Home Affairs Adviser Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Sunday said the police force must never act as protectors of any political party, reminding officers that they are state employees paid by taxpayers to serve the people and uphold the rule of law.
He made the remarks while addressing the passing-out ceremony of the 41st BCS probationary Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP) at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah as the chief guest.
Referring to the upcoming national parliamentary election, the adviser said peace and order cannot be ensured through force alone without earning public trust. He assured that the police are fully prepared to ensure a free, fair and neutral election, noting that around 100,000 police personnel have already received special training for election duties.
Jahangir Alam instructed officers to maintain strict neutrality while on election duty and warned them against accepting any unethical benefits or hospitality. Any disorder at polling centres, he said, must be handled firmly in line with the directions of the returning officer.
Acknowledging that police officers may face pressure and criticism in their professional lives, he said honesty, patriotism and integrity are essential to overcoming challenges. He called for building a humane, courageous and corruption-free police force that reflects the sacrifices of the people and meets the expectations of future generations.
During the ceremony, the home affairs adviser also distributed awards among outstanding cadets. ASP Muhammad Sazzad Hossain was named best probationer, Mehedi Arif best academic, Sajib Hossain best in field activities, Mosleh Uddin Ahmed best in horsemanship and Salman Faruque best shooter.
Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam, Senior Secretary to the Home Ministry Nasimul Gani, BPA Principal Towfique Mahbub Chowdhury, DIG Dr Muhammad Shahjahan and Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dr Zillur Rahman were also present.
A total of 96 ASPs from different BCS batches took part in the passing-out parade, which the chief guest reviewed before receiving the ceremonial salute.
