Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to address his first election rally of the forthcoming general election in Sylhet on January 22. The rally will take place at the Sylhet Government Alia Madrasha ground at 11:00am, according to party sources.
BNP units in Sylhet and neighbouring Sunamganj have been making extensive preparations for the event. Local leaders have been holding regular coordination meetings, distributing leaflets, and visiting the rally venue to review stage setup, security arrangements, crowd management, and traffic control. Party leaders said detailed instructions have been given to ensure the programme is held peacefully and in an orderly manner.
BNP candidate for Sylhet-4 Ariful Huq Chowdhury described the rally as a landmark event in the movement to restore democracy in Bangladesh. He said the BNP, under Tarique Rahman’s leadership, is championing the people’s voting rights and expressed confidence that Sylhet’s citizens will turn out in large numbers.
Sylhet district BNP president Abdul Quiyum Chowdhury said all necessary preparations have been completed for Tarique Rahman’s visit, with special emphasis on discipline, security, and smooth coordination. Meanwhile, Sylhet city BNP acting president Rezaul Hasan Quayes Lodi said the rally represents not only an election campaign but also a strong symbol of the party’s anti-fascist movement.
According to the schedule, Tarique Rahman is expected to arrive in Sylhet by air on the night of January 21. On the morning of January 22, he will visit the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal and Hazrat Shah Paran before addressing the public rally.
After the Sylhet programme, Tarique Rahman will return to Dhaka by road. On his way back, he is scheduled to stop in Sherpur and Sayesthaganj areas of Habiganj, where he will address separate roadside rallies and formally introduce BNP candidates to the electorate.
Party leaders believe the Sylhet rally will set the tone for BNP’s broader election campaign across the country in the coming days.
