Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has announced three days of state mourning following the death of former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia. A general holiday has also been declared tomorrow, the day of her Namaz-e-Janaza.

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Monday announced a three-day state mourning beginning tomorrow following the death of Khaleda Zia, three-time former prime minister and chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He also declared a one-day general holiday on the day of her Namaz-e-Janaza.

The announcement came during a televised address to the nation at noon, broadcast simultaneously on Bangladesh Television (BTV) and Bangladesh Betar. In his address, Prof Yunus urged citizens to maintain discipline, patience and order during the funeral rites and the period of national mourning.

“Today, our entire nation stands still in deep grief and sorrow,” the chief adviser said, describing Khaleda Zia as a central figure in Bangladesh’s democratic political history. “With her death, the nation has lost a great guardian.”

Expressing profound condolences on behalf of the state, Prof Yunus extended sympathy to Khaleda Zia’s family, political colleagues, and her countless leaders, activists and supporters. He prayed for strength and patience for the nation to endure what he described as an irreplaceable loss.

Highlighting her political legacy, the chief adviser said Khaleda Zia’s role in the struggle for democracy, the establishment of a multi-party political culture, and the protection of people’s rights would remain “indelibly etched in history.” He noted that her uncompromising leadership against autocracy and authoritarianism repeatedly inspired the nation and guided it through critical moments.

“Khaleda Zia’s long political journey, people-oriented leadership and unwavering commitment to the independence and sovereignty of the country will remain unforgettable,” Prof Yunus said, adding that the void left by such a visionary and patriotic leader “can never be filled.”

Calling for unity during the mourning period, the chief adviser urged citizens to remain vigilant so that no one could exploit the moment of grief to create instability or carry out acts of sabotage. He emphasized that responsible conduct by all was essential at this sensitive time for the nation.
