Dhaka, Bangladesh — In a tragic incident in Dhaka's Kasaituli area on November 21, 2025, three pedestrians lost their lives when the railing of a five-story building collapsed following a recent earthquake. The victims were identified as Rafiul Islam (20), a second-year student at Sir Salimullah Medical College, Abdur Rahim (48), a businessman, and his 12-year-old son Abdul Aziz, also known as Rimon.
On Saturday, November 22, 2025, Engineer Md. Riyazul Islam, the Chairman of the Rajuk (Capital Development Authority), visited the site of the accident. Upon inspection, he discovered that the building's roof railing had been constructed without essential materials such as sand and cement, which led to its collapse during the earthquake's tremors.
In a stern statement, the Rajuk Chairman expressed his outrage, stating that such negligence had caused the deaths of three individuals. He directed his criticism towards the building owner’s representative, who was present at the site, asking, "How can you not be upset? Three people died because of your construction work. There is no sand or cement in this railing."
The Chairman held the building's owner accountable for the incident and warned them of the consequences. He said, "You are responsible for their deaths, and you will have to answer to God for this." He also issued a warning regarding the building's design, urging that a proper design must be submitted within seven days. Failure to do so, he said, would result in the building being sealed off.
The incident has sparked widespread anger over the poor construction practices that led to the deaths, prompting calls for stronger regulations and oversight in building safety.
