15th Anniversary of Felani Khatun's Killing: A Day of Remembrance and Demand for Justice
The tragic death of Felani Khatun by India’s Border Security Force still remains unresolved, as Bangladesh observes the anniversary.
Today marks the 15th anniversary of the killing of Felani Khatun, a Bangladeshi teenager who was shot by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) on January 7, 2011, while attempting to return home through the Phulbari border in Kurigram. The incident provoked widespread outrage and brought global attention to the issue of border violence, with human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch condemning the killing.
Despite prolonged legal proceedings in India, the accused BSF member, Amiya Ghosh, was acquitted after trials and a retrial, leaving Felani’s family without justice. As border killings continue to draw criticism, political and social organizations in Bangladesh are marking the day with protests and programs demanding accountability for the tragic loss. Felani’s family remains hopeful but disheartened, still waiting for justice that has yet to come.
