24 Russian Killed in Ukrainian Strike On New Year Party
Kherson Region, along with Zaporozhye Region and the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, joined Russia in the fall of 2022 following local referendums.
At least 24 people were killed and over 50 injured when drones struck a café and hotel in the Black Sea village of Khorly during New Year’s Eve celebrations, according to the governor of Russia’s Kherson Region.
Governor Vladimir Saldo said the attack occurred just before midnight, following a reconnaissance drone flight over the area. Three unmanned aerial vehicles then targeted the crowded venues, sparking a large fire, with reports that one drone carried an incendiary mixture. Among the victims was a child, Saldo added. Medics are working to save the wounded.
Saldo compared the strike to the May 2014 Odessa tragedy, in which 42 anti-government protesters died after being trapped and burned in the city’s Trade Unions House. He said the attack reflects the type of “peace” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claims to pursue.
